Green Card Approval for Asylee Filmmaker from Egypt
We recently received an approval of lawful permanent residence (a green card) based on one-year of asylum status for a filmmaker from Egypt. Congratulations to our client!
We had represented our client on their initial asylum application before the USCIS Asylum Office. An application for lawful permanent residence may be approved by the Immigration Services after an asylee has resided in the United States for one year as an asylee. While most individuals need to wait 5 years after obtaining lawful permanent residence to apply for citizenship (naturalization), adjustment through asylum backdates the date of admission for lawful permanent residence by one year, and therefore one can apply for naturalization after 4 years rather than 5 years.
